App Permissions
Effective October 13, 2026. SMVrater is operated by 9GG LLC, 30 N Gould St, Ste R, Sheridan, WY 82801, USA.
This page lists every permission the SMVrater Android app (package app.ninegg.smvrater) declares, why it is there, and when it is used. It also covers what the website asks your browser for.
Permissions Android asks you to allow
- Camera (android.permission.CAMERA). Asked the first time you tap Take photo. Used only to take the one photo you want scored. Optional: you can decline and choose a photo from your gallery instead.
- Microphone (android.permission.RECORD_AUDIO). Asked the first time you tap Start recording. Used only while the recording timer on the Voice screen is running, for at most 30 seconds. The app never records in the background. Optional: without it, photo rating still works.
Before either one is used, the screen tells you where the photo or recording will be sent, and you tick a box to agree.
Permissions granted automatically
- Internet (android.permission.INTERNET). To reach the SMVrater server.
- Network state (android.permission.ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE). Declared by the framework the app is built on, which uses it to check whether the phone is online.
- Audio settings (android.permission.MODIFY_AUDIO_SETTINGS). To switch the phone's audio into recording mode while you record, and back afterward.
- Vibrate (android.permission.VIBRATE). Declared by the framework the app is built on. SMVrater has no feature that uses it.
What the app does not ask for
- Photos and storage: no storage or media permission. When you choose a photo, Android's own photo picker opens and hands the app only the photo you select. The app cannot see the rest of your gallery.
- Location, contacts, calendar, phone, SMS, Bluetooth, nearby devices: none.
- Notifications: none. The app sends no push notifications.
- Advertising ID: not read. The app contains no advertising or analytics software.
- Background activity: no background location, no background microphone, no foreground services.
- Fingerprint or face unlock: not used. Version 1.2.0 listed the biometric permissions because the secure storage component declares them by default, but the app never used them. They are removed from version 1.2.1 on.
Changing your mind
Open Android Settings, then Apps, then SMVrater, then Permissions, and switch Camera or Microphone off. The app asks again the next time you use that feature. Uninstalling the app removes everything it stored on your phone. To remove your account data from our server, use Delete account.
On the website
The website asks your browser for the microphone only when you tap Start recording on the Voice tab. You can upload an audio file instead. Photos are chosen through your browser's file chooser, which gives the site only the file you pick. The site does not ask for location or notifications.
