Do you have vocal fry?
Vocal fry is the low, creaky sound that creeps in at the ends of sentences. Record 20 seconds and SMVrater gives you a "no vocal fry" score, along with the rest of your voice breakdown.
One voice rating is free every 30 days. For adults 18 and older.
Score, practice, rescore
- Read a short passage aloud for 20 seconds. You get a 1 to 10 voice score and a score for each part of your voice.
- SMVrater picks the parts that hold your score back and builds a seven-day plan of short drills, about six minutes a day.
- Record again. A before-and-after card shows how far your score moved, and you can share it.
What causes vocal fry
Fry appears when the breath runs low and the pitch drops to the bottom of your range, so the vocal folds flutter instead of vibrating evenly. It is common at the ends of long sentences. It is a habit, not a fault in your voice.
How to reduce it
- Keep air moving until the last word is finished.
- Speak one step above the note where your voice starts to crackle.
- Take a breath at every comma instead of pushing through long sentences.
Questions
How does the vocal fry test work?
The software looks for the irregular, very low-pitched pulses that define fry and reports how much of your speech contains them, as a 1 to 10 "no vocal fry" score. 10 means none was detected.
Is vocal fry bad?
It is a normal speech pattern and it does not harm your voice. Some listeners hear it as tired or disengaged, which is why people who speak for work often want less of it.
How long does it take to reduce vocal fry?
It is a breath habit, so it changes with daily practice. The plan is seven days of short drills, then you record again and compare.
Do you keep my recording?
No. It is deleted as soon as it is scored.
Your recording is not kept
The recording is measured on our own server and deleted as soon as the score is computed. No person listens to it. Only the score numbers are saved, for your progress chart. The score is an automated measurement of how your voice sounds, not a judgment of you, and the drills are ordinary voice practice, not speech therapy or medical advice.
