How does the voice rating work?

SMVrater measures the sound of your voice, not your words: pitch, resonance, smoothness, vocal fry, harshness and how much your pitch moves. The male rubric scores bass, chest resonance, smoothness, warm tone, melody and freedom from vocal fry. The female rubric scores feminine pitch, freedom from vocal fry, gentleness, smoothness and melody.

What makes a voice attractive?

Listeners tend to prefer a voice that is clear, steady and relaxed, with natural pitch movement. In male voices, lower pitch and fuller chest resonance score well. In female voices, a clear tone without vocal fry and a gentle, melodic delivery score well. The cut-offs come from published research on which voice qualities listeners rate as attractive. It is a guide for comparing your own recordings over time, not a verdict.

Can I improve my voice score?

Yes. Most of what the score measures responds to practice: breath support, pace, placement, warm-up and microphone technique. Each result comes with drills for the parts that scored lowest, and a second recording shows the change.

Is the voice test free?

One voice rating is free every 30 days with an account. A US$3.99 pack adds five ratings, and Plus at US$5.99 a month allows up to 30 ratings a month and unlocks the full seven-day coaching plan.

Do you keep my recording?

No. It is deleted as soon as it is scored. Only the score numbers are saved.

Your recording is not kept

The recording is measured on our own server and deleted as soon as the score is computed. No person listens to it. Only the score numbers are saved, for your progress chart. The score is an automated measurement of how your voice sounds, not a judgment of you, and the drills are ordinary voice practice, not speech therapy or medical advice.
